The Mauna Lani Bay Hotel & Bungalows invites local organizations and charities to participate in the 19th annual Charity Trees at Mauna Lani this holiday season. The event helps to raise awareness and much-needed funds for local nonprofit organizations.
Each decorated tree will be displayed in Mauna Lani Bay’s hotel lobby through the holiday season. Community members, resort guests, employees, friends and family are invited to view the entries and vote for their favorite tree — $1 donation per vote.
The trees will be on display from Dec. 3 and winners will be announced Dec. 19. Mauna Lani Bay will be awarding cash prizes to the organizations whose trees receive the highest number of votes: $2,000 for first place, $1,000 for second and $500 for third. Donations will be split among all participating organizations — excluding first, second and third place winners. All for-profit organizations must designate a charity to receive their donation.

Hearing to discuss
fish collection Dec. 5
The Department of Land and Natural Resources will hold a public hearing in December to amend existing regulations, and adopt new regulations in Hawaii Administrative Rules for management of aquarium fish collecting in West Hawaii.
The hearing will begin at 6 p.m. Dec. 5 at the Kealakehe High School cafeteria at 74-5000 Puohulihuli St., in Kailua-Kona. The West Hawa‘ rules would amend HRA chapters 13-54,13-57 and 13-75, repeal 13-60.3 and adopt a new replacement chapter 13-60.4.
The rules propose a scuba spearfishing prohibition, closing a 1,500-foot section of Kaohe Bay in South Kona to aquarium collecting, establishment of a list of 40 fish species permitted for aquarium take with size and bag limits on three of these species, prohibition on take or possession of nine species of inshore sharks, rays and two invertebrate crown-of-thorns predators, and several other rule changes to enhance enforcement of aquarium collecting regulations and to clarify existing rule provisions.
Individuals unable to attend the hearing or wishing to present additional comments may submit written testimony by Dec. 19 to the Division of Aquatic Resources Kona office at 74-380B Kealakehe Parkway, Kailua-Kona, HI 96740.
Draft rules may be reviewed on the Division of Aquatic Resources website at hawaii.gov/dlnr/dar in the “What’s New” section, or at the division offices at the above addresses. Additional information or a copy of the proposed rule changes will be mailed at no charge upon receipt of verbal or written request to the addresses above.
All interested individuals are urged to attend a public hearing to present relevant information and individual opinion for the DLNR to consider.
Anyone with a hearing impairment who desires to attend the public hearings may request assistance of a sign language interpreter. The request may be made in writing to the address in the preceding paragraph, or by calling 587-0100 (voice or TDD) in Honolulu. The request will need to be received at least seven days before the hearing is scheduled to start.
VFW ladies auxiliary instituted Saturday
The ladies auxilary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 12122 will be instituted beginning at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the Elks Lodge in Kailua-Kona. Members and guests are invited to attend.
